Who we are

The Peoples Yoga is a unique low-cost community-oriented yoga studio located in the lovely Alberta Arts neighborhood. We were established as a direct response to members of our community who feel yoga is financially out of their reach but who wish to be included in the many and varied healing benefits yoga has to offer. Our purpose is to provide classes, workshops and trainings that are accessible to all regardless of economic barriers. Offering over 30 yoga classes per week, with styles ranging from beginner to advanced, we hope to foster a diverse, non-dogmatic, warm and encouraging environment free of competition and expectations to fit within the commercial mold.

What we are

We are based on the social business model developed by the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus (Author of "Creating a World Without Poverty: Social Business and the Future of Capitalism"). A social business is one that aims to be financially self-sufficient, if not profitable, in its pursuit of a social, ethical or environmental goal. Unlike a normal for profit business, after covering our expenses and salaries the profits from the studio are funneled back into the community we serve.

Our current community programs consist of a teacher/student scholarship fund and partnerships with local non-profits Street Yoga (http://www.streetyoga.org/) and Living Yoga (http://www.living-yoga.org/) to provide classes/programs for under-served populations with specific needs and concerns.

    Our scholarship fund will:
  • Subsidize the cost to our teachers of continuing their education.
  • Offer financial assistance to students who can not afford our class costs.
  • Offer scholarships for our students to attend outside teacher trainings and workshops with local studios.
  • Current class offerings in partnership with Street Yoga and Living Yoga:
  • Recovery Yoga - Sundays 10-11:30pm beginning Feb 14th
  • The Teachers

We go so much further than just offering low cost yoga classes, our teachers balance their experience and knowledge with a wonderful ability to be light hearted, warm and fun. There is no shortage of personality in our studio! They teach with us out of a firm belief that yoga should and can be available to everyone. All hold extensive training in varied schools of yoga from Iyengar to Anusara. We are always open and accepting of our students and are grateful to have the opportunity to teach and practice with you.
